Civil Lighting vs Poultry-Specific Lights: Don’t Make Poultry House Lighting “Visually Bright Only”

Many poultry farmers fall into a simple misunderstanding when renovating poultry house lighting: if it looks bright to human eyes, the lighting meets the flock’s requirements.


They purchase low-cost civilian LED lights for poultry houses. Although the upfront procurement cost is low, problems will arise after a period of operation, including increased pecking behavior, slow rise in egg production and deteriorated feed conversion ratio.


Many people wonder: both are LED lights. What is the difference between civilian lights and poultry-specific lights?


 1. Core Difference: Light for Humans ≠ Light Poultry Need

Chickens have a visual system completely different from humans. Human eyes are most sensitive to yellow light, while poultry can perceive more red and blue wavelengths. The light spectrum directly affects poultry’s hormone secretion, feeding, reproduction and behaviors.


✅ Civilian LED Lights

Design purpose: To satisfy human lighting needs and prioritize brightness visible to human eyes. The spectrum lacks the tailored ratio of red and blue wavelengths required by poultry.

Drawbacks:

1. Disordered spectrum. Certain wavelengths may overexcite flocks and trigger feather pecking and vent pecking;

2. Severe invisible flicker. Long-term stimulation causes stress in chickens;

3. Obvious temperature drift. Color temperature and illuminance degrade rapidly in hot poultry houses, with sharp brightness drop after half a year of use.


✅ Poultry-Specific Lights (Tianzhinuo)

Design purpose: Matched with poultry photosensitive characteristics. Customized spectra for laying hens, broilers and Muscovy ducks at different growth stages.

Laying hen version: Optimized red light proportion to boost reproductive hormone secretion and stabilize egg production rate;

Broiler / Muscovy duck version: Combined green and red light to calm flocks, reduce mortality and improve feed conversion ratio;

Flicker-free driver and wide-temperature design. Illuminance and spectrum can be maintained stably for a long time under high temperature and humidity inside poultry houses.

Key reminder: Illuminance is measured for chickens, not judged by human eyes.At the same perceived brightness, the effective photosynthetic illuminance of civilian lights is usually much lower than that of poultry-specific lights.


2. Field Trial: Side-by-Side Comparison Test

A 4-tier caged laying hen farm in Fujian installed ordinary civilian LED lights in the first poultry house and replaced with Tianzhinuo poultry-specific lights in the second house.

 House 1 (civilian lights): High incidence of pecking behavior, short duration of egg production peak; obvious brightness attenuation after 6 months and frequent lamp replacement.

 House 2 (Tianzhinuo specific lights): Same wattage and lighting hours, spectrum adapted to laying hen physiology. Calmer flocks, less pecking and prolonged egg production peak.


Farmer’s feedback: The money saved on purchasing cheap lamps was eventually lost due to mortality, declined egg yield and frequent lamp replacement & maintenance.


 3. 3 Practical Tips to Avoid Lighting Pitfalls

1. Never judge brightness by naked eyes. Use an illuminometer to measure illuminance at chicken head height. Test every layer of cages to ensure even light distribution;

2. Reject lamps with high-frequency flicker.Chickens are extremely sensitive to flicker, and invisible stress cannot be detected by human eyes;

3.Prioritize spectrum, then wattage.Wattage only represents power consumption; spectrum determines the impact on poultry production performance.
